Story: This movie explores the circumstances and causes of the Godhra incident in 2002, which resulted in the untimely deaths of fifty-nine train passengers. The Sabarmati Report Movie Review

Review: “The Sabarmati Report” explores the terrible Godhra tragedy, in which 59 people died on board the Sabarmati Express in 2002. For the most part, the film’s two-hour runtime keeps audiences interested. The movie aims to question conventional wisdom by arguing that history has frequently been influenced by skewed viewpoints and advocating for a reconsideration. Regretfully, it could have been much more engaging with a more realistic and grounded portrayal. The Godhra incident is mostly ignored in the first half, which instead concentrates on how a broadcasting company manipulates its coverage to benefit the ruling party at the time and takes advantage of its close ties for political ends.

The movie centres on Hindi journalist Samar Kumar (played by Vikrant Massey), who is hired by Mahika (played by Ridhi Dogra), a sardonic reporter for a major broadcast network. They go to Godhra together to cover the terrible event. But Mahika’s story is changed when she gets a call from her boss, who frames the incident as a mere mishap. Through his own research, Samar discovers a reality that is very different from what his channel has been reporting. He is abruptly fired after confronting his employer. He struggles to find another job, which causes him to become depressed and drink. The network designates Amrita Gill (Raashi Khanna) to reexamine the case as the fifth anniversary of the incident draws near. She asks Samar for advice, and the two of them draft a new, unvarnished version of what happened.

Vikrant Massey skilfully and sincerely captures the essence of an honest reporter in his portrayal of Samar Kumar. Although producer Amrita, played by Raashi Khanna, also does a good job, Ridhi Dogra’s portrayal of Mahika, a cunning, vicious journalist, is the one that really grabs the audience’s attention. Her portrayal is incisive, displaying a terrifying sense of entitlement and conceit. But the movie makes mistakes in its research. Since tape deliveries were typically handled by bus drivers or airline passengers in that era, it is impractical to depict journalists travelling great distances to Delhi just to deliver them. Furthermore, by 2002, OB vans were frequently utilised for satellite video transmission. Also, viewers should be wary of Mahika’s portrayal of her character because it heavily relies on stereotypes.

The majority of “The Sabarmati Report” keeps viewers’ interest, but because of its somewhat glossy treatment, it comes across as more of a conventional commercial drama than a movie based on actual events. Although it is successful in teaching viewers about the enduring effects of this terrible event, its authenticity is somewhat undermined by the film’s artistic flourishes.
