Best Hollywood Movies of the Decade

When discussing the best Hollywood movies of the decade, it’s essential to reflect on films that captured audiences’ hearts and pushed the boundaries of storytelling and filmmaking. In the last ten years, many cinematic masterpieces have left an indelible mark on the industry. Some standout films have defined this era, from gripping dramas to groundbreaking blockbusters.

  1. Parasite (2019)
Under direction of Bong Joon-ho, Parasite is a genre-bending thriller examining South Korea’s class divide. The movie tracks the underprivileged Kim family as they plot to work for the rich Park family. Parasite, with its keen social critique and surprising turns, won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, therefore creating history as the first non-English language film to do so.
  2. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
With its breathtaking images and furious speed, George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road restored the action subgenre. Filmed in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) and Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) are followed as they flee a despotic warlord. Six Oscars were awarded to the movie for its female undertones and realistic effects, therefore highlighting Miller’s superb direction.
  3. Get Out (2017)
Get Out, Jordan Peele’s first directing effort, is a horror film deftly addressing racial tensions in America. Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) is a young Black man who discovers unsettling facts about the family of his white lover over a weekend trip. Critical praise and an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay came from Peele’s original mix of horror and social critique.
  4. The Shape of Water (2017)
The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro is a romantic tale on a mute lady (Sally Hawkins) who bonds with an amphibious creature kept imprisoned in a government lab. With its rich images and moving ideas of love and acceptance, the movie won four Oscars—including Best Picture and Best Director for del Toro.
  5. 1917 (2019)
A World War I epic film, Sam Mendes’ 1917 will show as one continuous take, enveloping viewers in the terrifying journey of two British soldiers assigned with a vital mission. Roger Deakins’s amazing photography helps the movie to showcase themes of bravery and sacrifice while capturing the anarchy and fury of conflict.
  6. La La Land (2016)
Under Damien Chazelle’s direction, this contemporary musical features Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as aspirant artists and actors negotiating love and ambition in Los Angeles. With its sentimental homage to vintage musicals, La La Land won six Academy Awards—including Best Director for Chazelle—and was much-loved.

  7. Black Panther (2018)
Under Ryan Coogler’s direction, Black Panther broke through convention as a superhero movie with a mostly Black cast and crew. Filmed in the fictitious African nation of Wakanda, it centres T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) as he wrestles with his king’s duties and identity. Celebrated for its cultural value, the movie won three Oscars and became a Hollywood landmark in representation.
  8. Nomadland (2020)
After losing everything in the Great Recession, ChloĂ© Zhao’s Nomadland chronicles Fern (Frances McDormand), a woman sets out across the American West. Combining documentary aspects with fiction, Zhao’s close depiction of modern-day nomadism won her two Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture.
  9. The Irishman (2019)
The Irishman, an epic criminal thriller by Martin Scorsese, follows the life of Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro), a hitman engaged in organised crime alongside people like Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino.). The film’s inventive de-aging technique and deft narrative highlight Scorsese’s ongoing skill as a director.
  10. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
With its original animation technique and varied characters, this animated feature—directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman—redefined superhero storytelling. Following teenage Miles Morales as he transforms into Spider-Man, the movie honours bravery in several spheres and appeals to viewers of many backgrounds.

These films represent some of the best Hollywood movies of the decade and reflect significant cultural shifts within society. They showcase how cinema can be entertaining and thought-provoking, offering audiences new perspectives on familiar themes.
