Even though comedy is supposed to be fun, it can get people into a lot of trouble. Over the years, several Indian comedians have been arrested or gone to jail because of the jokes they told.

The stories of Indian comedians arrests whose jokes got them in trouble with the law. Munawar Faruqui was arrested because he was thought to have made hurtful jokes about Hindu gods. People didn’t like Tanmay Bhat’s imitation of former President APJ Abdul Kalam. People didn’t like Kapil Sharma’s sexist jokes and public fights. Kunal Kamra was banned by airlines after he argued with a reporter and was being charged with contempt of court. With his monologue “Two Indias,” Vir Das caused a stir that led to legal complaints and backlash.

List Of Indian Comedians Who Faced Jail Time:

Munawar Faruqui

Some people say that Munawar Faruqui was arrested in Indore in 2021 for making jokes about Hindu gods and Home Minister Amit Shah. People had a lot to say about free speech and the limits of comedy after he was arrested. Even though Faruqui got bail, threats from right-wing groups caused several of his shows to be cancelled.

Tanmay Bhat

In 2016, Tanmay Bhat got a lot of negative feedback for a Snapchat video in which he used a face filter to look like APJ Abdul Kalam, who was the president of India at the time. People said the video was rude, and legal complaints were made. Later, Bhat said sorry, but the event showed how thin the line is between funny and offensive in comedy.

Kapil Sharma

People didn’t like Kapil Sharma in 2016 because he told sexist jokes about women working in government offices and got into a public fight with another comedian, Sunil Grover. Sharma’s public image and professional relationships were hurt by the controversy, which led to conversations about comedians’ roles in public discourse.

Kunal Kamra

After getting into a fight with journalist Arnab Goswami on a flight in 2020, Kunal Kamra was banned from several airlines. The Supreme Court also threatened to punish him for contempt of court for tweets that attacked the court system. The things that happened with Kamra made people think about the limits of free speech and what happens when people fight in public.

Vir Das

“Two Indias,” Vir Das‘s monologue that he performed at the Kennedy Centre in Washington, D.C. in 2021, got him in trouble. India’s contradictions were brought up in the monologue, which caused legal complaints and backlash from political groups. Das defended his performance by saying it was a comment on current events. It started discussions about freedom of speech and patriotism.

Kiku Sharda

In January 2016, Indian comedian Kiku Sharda was arrested for imitating Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a sketch on Comedy Nights with Kapil. He was charged under IPC sections 295A (making religious feelings hurt) and 153A (inciting hatred between groups). Kiku said he was sorry and just following the script, but he was still sent to judicial custody. People in India talked about freedom of speech and the risks comedians take when they make fun of important people.
