IMDB, the go-to platform for film enthusiasts, has curated an exciting list of 25 must-watch films slated for release in 2025. This year, Superman, Avatar, and Bridget Jones are all coming back. There are also new films from Bong Joon-ho, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Ryan Coogler.
Elio
Monsters, fish, cars, superheroes, elves, and emotions are some of the things that Pixar has done. Now, Elio, an animated movie about aliens from the smartest animation studio in the business. Its main character is a shy young boy who is crazy about space, so he is thrilled to be beamed up to the Communiverse, where intelligent beings from all over the universe live. Smart living things have mistaken him for the supreme leader of Earth, which is the only problem. Inside Out 2 was Pixar’s most successful movie and the highest-grossing movie of 2024. Elio might not be as successful, but it looks good, in part because its co-director, Domee Shi, made the great movie Turning Red. And The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, another 2025 cartoon in which Daffy Duck and Porky Pig save the world from aliens, might go really well with this one.
Elio Releases on June 2025
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy
Twenty-four years after Bridget Jones’ Diary, Renée Zellweger plays Bridget again in the fourth movie in the series. She is now middle-aged and has a different life, but she still has the same qualities that made her famous in the first place. Of course, she’s still a cute bumbler in real life. The romantic comedy is based on Helen Fielding’s 2013 book of the same name. Bridget has two young children and is now a widow after the death of Mark (Colin Firth in the first two films). She looks shocked when a coworker says, “I’ve set you up on Tinder.” She is now single again and a fan of dating apps. She is once again torn between two attractive men: Mr. Wallaker (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who is a teacher at her kids’ school, and Roxster (Leo Woodall), who is 29 years old. Hugh Grant is back as Daniel, Bridget’s kids’ Uncle Daniel. Jim Broadbent and Gemma Jones play her parents, and Shirley Henderson and Sally Phillips play her loyal best friends, Jude and Shazz.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy Releases on 13 February on Peacock in the US and 14 February in UK cinemas
Avatar: Fire and Ash
Three years will pass between Avatar: Fire and Ash and Avatar: The Way of Water. This is a very short amount of time by the standards of its director, James Cameron. The first two Avatar films came out 13 years apart, and Avatar and Titanic came out 12 years apart. Cameron doesn’t have to rush to pay the bills, though. Three of his most recent movies—Titanic and the first two Avatar movies—are among the four highest-grossing movies of all time. Avengers: Endgame is the fourth. Will Avatar: Fire and Ash join them as the most successful films of all time? As blue-skinned Na’vi on the moon of Pandora, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña are back. This time, they’re up against the “Ash people,” a group of bad Na’vi who live in a volcano. You can look forward to more CGI-heavy sci-fi sequels in 2024. Tron: Ares, the third Tron movie, comes out in October, and Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali star in Jurassic World Rebirth, which comes out in July.
Avatar: Fire and Ash Releases on December 2025
Superman
In 2025, both of Hollywood’s big superhero movie studios will start up again. Marvel is doing a “soft reboot,” which means that the stories will be about a new group of characters but will take place in the same made-up world as the other films. But DC is starting over, so Henry Cavill’s Superman, Ben Affleck’s Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and the rest will not be there. That’s most likely a good thing. The new DC Universe is being run by James Gunn, who was in Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. This means that it might have a bit more humour and lightness than the last few DC projects. Gunn also directed Superman, the first movie to take place in this new world. As of now, David Corenswet (Twisters) is playing Superman. Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel) is playing Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult is playing Lex Luthor. Aside from Krypto the Superdog, the trailer also says we’ll see a number of other DC superheroes.
Superman Releases on July 2025
