How Did Aurangzeb Kill Sambhaji Maharaj?
Aurangzeb’s capture and killing of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj is one of the most tragic events in Indian history. In February 1689, Sambhaji Maharaj and his advisor, Kavi Kalash, were attacked by Mughal soldiers led by Mukkarab Khan at Sangameshwar in Konkan. They were betrayed by people like Ganoji Shirke, who was Sambhaji’s brother-in-law.
They were taken to Burhanpur and brought before Aurangzeb while tied to camels and dressed in silly clothes to embarrass them. Refusing to bow or provide any information about Maratha treasures or Mughal informants, Sambhaji and Kavi Kalash faced inhumane torture for 40 days. This involved skinning, removing nails, blinding him, and cutting off Sambhaji’s tongue to stop him from resisting. Even though they suffered a lot of pain, neither of them betrayed their kingdom.
On March 11, 1689, Aurangzeb, upset by Sambhaji’s refusal to surrender, ordered him to be executed. Sambhaji Maharaj was killed by having his head cut off with an axe. His body was then chopped up and thrown into the village of Vadhu Budruk, which is near Tulapur by the Bhima River. Kavi Kalash had the same sad ending.
This brutal act changed the course of the Maratha Empire’s history, strengthening their determination to fight against Mughal control. Sambhaji Maharaj’s death shows his strong bravery and dedication to Hindavi Swarajya.
What Happened to Yesubai After Sambhaji’s Death?
After Sambhaji’s sad death, his wife, Maharani Yesubai, showed great strength. She managed the Maratha government and was crucial in protecting the kingdom during difficult times. Rashmika Mandanna will be seen portraying Maratha queen Yesubai Bhonsale in the historical drama Chhaava, alongside Vicky Kaushal.Â
What Makes Sambhaji Maharaj Famous in Indian History?
Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj is remembered for working hard to protect Hindavi Swarajya from foreign attacks, fighting against Portuguese Goa, and standing firm against Aurangzeb. His life is an inspiring story of courage, leadership, and strength.
