Biotech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson, famous for his tests on living longer, abruptly ended his talk with Nikhil Kamath during a recent podcast because of India’s air pollution. In the podcast, Johnson, who had a face mask on, made a joke about the air. When Kamath asked him how serious it was, he replied, “I can’t see you from here.”
Johnson, who went to India, used X to explain why he stopped the recording early. “The issue was that the room brought in outside air, so the air purifier I had didn’t work well.”
Johnson reported that the room’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was 130, and the PM2.5 levels were 75 µg/m³, which is about the same as having 3.4 cigarettes a day. “This is my third day in India, and the air pollution has caused my skin to break out in a rash and my eyes and throat to burn,” he said. “Air pollution is so common in India that people don’t notice it anymore, even though we know it is harmful.” People would be running outside. Babies and young children who are exposed from the time they are born. No one wore a mask, which could have greatly reduced their risk of exposure. “It was really confusing,” he said.
When in India, I did end this podcast early due to the bad air quality. @nikhilkamathcio was a gracious host and we were having a great time. The problem was that the room we were in circulated outside air which made the air purifier I'd brought with me ineffective.

Johnson highlighted the big effects on public health. “The evidence shows that India would improve the health of its population more by cleaning up air quality than by curing all cancers,” he wrote in his post.
“I’m confused why India’s leaders don’t treat air quality as a national emergency.” “I’m not sure what interests, money, and power are holding things back, but it’s really harmful to the whole country,” he said.
When he returned to the US, he said the experience helped him see things in a new way. “When I got back to the U.S., I was able to see things clearly that I had become used to.” I noticed fat everywhere. 42.4% of Americans are fat, and I didn’t really notice it because I was surrounded by it all the time.
He said that, similar to air pollution in India, obesity in the US is a serious problem that isn’t being taken seriously enough.

The post reached more than a million hits and became very popular. People online reacted in various ways to his post, but many asked for tips on how to reduce smog.
A fan asked, “How can we as a country make the air quality better?” What all can be done for that???” Another user said, “I’m happy that Bryan is openly discussing this!” The issue is that instead of facing this obvious problem and working to fix it, Bryan will be seen as spreading anti-India beliefs by the West.
