Following former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s death on Thursday, a contentious social media battle broke out between legendary actor Anupam Kher vs Hansal Mehta.

The dispute revolved on criticism of the 2019 political drama The Accidental Prime Minister, in which Mehta was the creative director and Kher played Singh.

This Is How It Began!

It all started when journalist Vir Sanghvi attacked the movie, charging it with spreading “lies” to damage Singh’s reputation and labelling it “one of the worst Hindi movies ever made.

Hansal Mehta retweeted Sanghvi’s post with a “+100” to show support for it. Kher took offence at this support and quickly criticised Mehta’s “double standards” in a scathing rebuttal on X (previously Twitter).

“The HYPOCRITE in this thread is NOT @virsanghvi,” Kher said, reminding Mehta of his role in the movie. He is free to not enjoy a movie. However, @mehtahansal served as #TheAccidentalPrimeMinister’s #CreativeDirector. He contributed creatively throughout the entire production in England and presumably have also received payment for it. Therefore, it is completely twisted up and full of double standards for him to respond 100% to #VirSanghvi’s comment! Common Hansal! Get over it!

The HYPOCRITE in this thread is NOT @virsanghvi. He has the freedom to not like a film. But @mehtahansal was the #CreativeDirector of #TheAccidentalPrimeMinister. Who was present at the entire shoot of the film in England! Giving his creative inputs and must have taken the fee… https://t.co/tkr3H1ChyX

Reaction to Anupam Kher’s Criticism of Hansal Mehta for “Double Standards”

Mehta responded by acknowledging that he made a mistake while working on the movie but maintained his professionalism. β€œOf course, Mr. Kher, I own my mistakes,” he said. I’m also willing to acknowledge that I was wrong. Can’t I? I performed my duties as professionally as possible. However, that doesn’t mean I have to continue defending the movie or become less objective about my mistake.

Of course I own my mistakes Mr Kher. And I can admit that I made a mistake. Can’t I sir? I did my job as professionally as I was allowed to. Can you deny that? But it doesn’t mean I have to keep defending the film or that it makes me lose objectivity about my error of judgement.… https://t.co/UIgc4Pdvww

“Call me names if you wish,” Mehta responded, adding a mocking apology. If I have unintentionally caused you pain, I apologise. I’m sending you love. We can talk and clear the air whenever you want.

And by the way @anupampkher sir… you can say all you want. Call me names if you wish. Apologies if I’ve inadvertently hurt you. Sending love to you. Whenever you wish we will speak and clear the air. I will not give space to trolls to distort this further and have a field day at… https://t.co/UIgc4PcXGY

As the dispute heated up, Kher retrieved previous tweets in which Mehta gave the movie and the crew high marks, reposting them with the words “Without comments.”

Concerning The Accidental Prime Minister

Based on Sanjaya Baru’s 2014 memoir, The Accidental Prime Minister portrayed Singh’s time serving as prime minister of India. The picture struggled at the box office and failed to please reviewers and fans despite its political backdrop and star-studded ensemble.
